Newly published documents suggest that famed World War II-era spy Yoshiko Kawashima, a relative of the ''Last Emperor'' Pu Yi, was executed in China, countering decades of conjecture that she paid for an impersonator to take her place before the firing squad.

The Manchurian icon, whose extraordinary life spawned several books and films and popular curiosity over her fate, was a prominent security official in the WWII-era Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo in northeastern China.

Despite her arrest by Chinese Nationalist authorities, conviction for treason and reported execution, doubts about her death endured for years.

But a recent publication from Taiwan's Justice Ministry, relying on court and prosecutorial documents sourced from China at the time, suggests that Kawashima was indeed executed.

The ministry publication, ''Seal of History: 100 Valuable Prison Archives,'' includes official reports testifying to the execution on March 25, 1948, five months after her death sentence was handed down.

One U.S.-based specialist, however, is not convinced by the documents, citing unresolved ''ambiguous'' circumstances and the absence of the obsessive attention that was normally paid to prominent enemies of then leader Chiang Kai-shek's government.

''Under Chiang Kai-shek's ever-suspicious mind, he would only accept and believe any of his condemned enemies (was) dead if he saw two photos of the individual -- one taken before the execution and one right after,'' said David Tsai, a retired U.S. Library of Congress official who is an expert on espionage history and

''This was a common and routine practice,'' he said.

But in Kawashima's case, only a postmortem photograph has surfaced, and the identity of the person in the photo has been disputed.

''The 'photograph' of her 'body' as released back then was of the poorest quality and was not authenticated in any convincing way,'' Tsai said.

Adding to the intrigue, the new documents indicate that Kawashima's body was photographed by several journalists, but it was not clear why these images of such a prominent figure would not have survived or been better distributed at the time.

Kawashima was born into royalty as a Manchu princess in the waning Qing Dynasty in the early 1900s, and originally carried the name Aisin Gioro Xianyu

It arrived at one of the Thursday morning valuation sessions at the rooms, brought in by a lady in a box of early 20th-century household China. She thought it was interesting, although she had no idea just how interesting.

What's so special about this well-used old tankard? For starters, it is solid silver - and it is getting on for 300 years old. The hallmarks tell us that it was in fact made in 1735. There is a maker's mark present but it has been rubbed over the years, hardly surprising with such an object, and it is now undecipherable.

We do clearly have the name of the original owner on the piece - Westerman.

That Mr Westerman was a bit of a toff is pretty obvious. A silver beer tankard of this quality was a real status symbol. Your average early 18th-century drinker would have made do with pot or pewter.

What may not be so readily apparent is that the size of the tankard - a pint - probably indicates that Mr Westerman was also a serious drinker. A pint may be a standard measure in the pub today but back then, beers were a lot stronger.

The beer sweeping the country in the early 18th-century was porter, a blend of brown ale, pale ale and well-matured ale. Its strength was typically six per cent, compared with a normal strength modern pint of three-and-a-half to four per cent. It was called porter because it was first created in London and immediately proved very popular with the army of porters who carried goods around the city at that time.

There was an even stronger version of the beer called stout porter, later reduced simply to stout, that typically came in at seven or eight per cent. If Mr Westerman was knocking that back in his silver tankard then he was quaffing the alcoholic equivalent of a quart of modern beer every time he handed it over the bar for a refill.

From an auction point of view, the tankard is something of a rarity, particularly locally. In this part of the world we do not see a lot of early silver, by which I mean pieces that pre-date 1800, and it is not exactly thick on the ground elsewhere. This tankard will attract the attention of high-end silver buyers and collectors.

While the condition, generally, is pretty good, it has inevitably had a few knocks and bumps over the past 275 years. Sorting out those little imperfections is skilful work but it could be done and it would be worth doing. The lady who brought it in to the valuation day after her attic clear-out thought it might make Pounds 30- Pounds 40 at auction. She was way under. When it goes under the hammer in the Spring Antiques and Fine Art Auction at the end of next month, it is going to make at least a couple of hundred pounds. She was pleased she got it checked out.

FOR SALE: This tankard was made in 1735.

Speaking of silver, that spring auction includes a really nice collection from a house in Grimsby, about 20 lots ranging in date from the Georgian period.

One of the star lots is a two-handled bowl made by the Dublin silversmith E Crofton in 1816. It is a real show-off piece that includes all of the craftsman's decorative weapons of choice, including chasing, repousee work and a silver gilt interior.

GUANGZHOU, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Two courts in Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong Province, sentenced 25 people to death in separate trials Thursday in nine kidnapping-for-ransom cases.

BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-one people in connection to a deadly fire that burned a section of the newly built China Central Television (CCTV) headquarters last year have been charged with causing an accident with dangerous goods, a procuratorate official confirmed to Xinhua Tuesday.

The No. 2 branch of Beijing Municipal People's Procuratorate referred the defendants to the Beijing Municipal No. 2 People's Intermediate Court on Sunday, said the official who asked not to be wholesale colthing named.

Enter sculpting. A sculpture is a three-dimensional work of art created by shaping or combining a variety of materials. It can be either a work of art in itself, or a scale model used for the actual construction of a larger version.

Throughout history, sculptors have generally sought to produce works of art that are as permanent as possible, working with durable albeit expensive materials such as bronze, marble, limestone, granite and even precious materials such as gold, silver, jade and ivory.

In addition to being objects of admiration and prestige, sculptures have also been commonly used for religious purposes across language and cultural borders.

Types of modelling clay

Modelling clay is a malleable substance used for thousands of years to produce pottery, buildings and artistic as well as religious objects.

DO BANKERS deserve their mega-bonuses? Do they deserve the increases in base salaries of up to [pounds sterling]300,000 that are alleged to have been paid last year? Is the Pope Jewish?

The answer has to be a resounding no. But it is instructive to ask why bankers feel they have a right to remuneration that dwarfs other professions. And why the failures of the banking system haven't (yet) led to the correction that apostles of free markets expect.

First, a few numbers. Remember that average household income in this country is around [pounds sterling]26,000. In 2007 (when the crisis had already broken), Sir Fred Goodwin at Royal Bank of Scotland got total remuneration of [pounds sterling]4.2m, Eric Daniels (Lloyds) got [pounds sterling]2.9m and Andy Hornby (HBoS) got [pounds sterling]1.9m.

In 2008, the chief executive of HSBC got about [pounds sterling]1.8m - and his counterpart at Santander (now Human hair wigs a fixture on the High Street) got [pounds sterling]8.8m. In 2009, the Treasury imposed a 50pc 'bonus tax' on banks that paid more than [pounds sterling]25,000 in discretionary pay. However there is no sign that it had any impact.

Oh, and then there's Goldman Sachs. In 2009, average remuneration per employee at Goldman was just under US $500,000.

This was, of course, during a period when governments pumped around $11trillion into the banking system to offset the horlicks that bankers had made of the global economy.

So, why do bankers earn so much - and why do they expect to earn it? Is it because banking is difficult, like brain surgery or rocket science? No, retail and commercial banking is fairly routine. At the top end, it used to be decently paid. But no more so than, say, Woolworth's top brass.

At the branch level, it was paid much like local government, because the skill-set was the same. In the sexier investment banking area - structured finance, derivatives, M&A - the skills are more exotic, but not that exotic.

Plus, investment banking was traditionally a feast-andfamine business. One year, bonuses could be three Cheap lace front wigs times salaries; other times, banks with household names were kiting the salary cheques because there was no money in the kitty.

One consequence was a cycle of consolidation, disappearance and renewal. And then came the creation of great 'universal' banks, on both sides of the Atlantic. Banking, broking, M&A and the villain of the piece, prop trading - all under one roof.

Government-guaranteed retail deposits essentially underwrote everything that the 'casino' end of the bank did, thereby reducing the risk. But not the reward. That's the rub.

The investment banking culture permeated the organisation - but without those bad years when bonuses were zero or partners actually put money back into the banks. The industry was de-risked, but participants were paid as if it were still a wildly cyclical and dangerous business.

How did they get away with it? Well, the first law of finance is that a very small percentage of a very, very, very, large number is still a very large number.

Trillions of pounds move through the London foreign exchange market every day, for instance. Individual M&A deals, for example Cadbury, easily run into the billions. Ten basis points (0.1pc) of a billion pounds is still a million. So
