New research finds benefits in

LOS ANGELES

Three years after the U.S. blood banking industry recommended against transfusing plasma from female donors because of a potentially life-threatening antibody reaction, researchers have found that plasma from women may actually be better, not worse, for heart surgery patients.

In a study of patients treated before the new guidelines were implemented, those receiving plasma from women were only half as likely to suffer lung complications from the surgery and were 45 percent less likely to be hospitalized or die in the 10 days after surgery, a Duke University Medical Center team reported.

The long-term survival rates, however, were the same whether plasma came from men or women.

The findings, published in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, were a surprise to the researchers. They had expected that their results would support the informal restrictions on plasma use, said co-author Dr. Nicholas Bandarenko, medical director of Duke Transfusion Services.

The findings suggest that, in an effort to minimize the risk of catastrophic lung injury, surgeons may be shifting to problems that are not as serious, but substantially more common.

The concern about plasma from women arises from a rare phenomenon known as transfusion-related acute lung injury, commonly known as TRALI.

With symptoms similar to acute respiratory distress syndrome, TRALI affects as many as one in every 3,000 patients who receive a plasma transfusion, killing an estimated 200 people in the United States each year. It is responsible for about half of all transfusion-related deaths.

TRALI usually occurs within six hours of a transfusion and is characterized by a sharp buildup of fluids in the lung and other problems. It is thought to be caused by certain antibodies in the plasma that react with immune cells of the body into which they are transfused. Such antibodies are more common in the blood of women because of their pregnancies.

In 2006, AABB (formerly the American Association of Blood Banks) recommended that its members take steps to minimize the risk of TRALI.

Some institutions, such as the American Red Cross, now use plasma only from men for transfusions, saving Thomas sabo charms that from women for the preparation of drugs and other purposes. Others reject plasma from women who have had one or more pregnancies. A few hospitals screen all plasma for the antibodies.

The concerns do not involve whole blood, and AABB and other organizations emphasize that female blood donors continue to play an important role in maintaining the blood supply.

In the study, Dr. Mark Stafford-Smith, an anesthesiology professor at Duke, and his colleagues examined records from 2,157 heart surgery patients at Duke who had received plasma between June 1, 1995, and June 30, 2002.

The team identified 309 matched pairs of patients who had received plasma exclusively from either males or females.

They found that patients who received plasma exclusively from females had a 5.9 percent incidence of lung problems, compared with 10.8 percent for those who received plasma exclusively from males. The risk of death or hospitalization for the two groups were 9 percent and 16.4 percent, respec

New training could change the

When men in Riverside Park solicited sex from other men a few years ago, Janesville police went undercover and made arrests.

The problem ended, but the operation was time consuming and required lots of manpower.

In hindsight, police could have sent letters to the registered owners of vehicles driven by men causing the problem.

The letters could have told them that their cars were seen at the park when illegal sexual behavior occurred and asked them to call police if they had seen anything.

Such a letter would have solved the problem, and it would have saved time and money.

Janesville police want to do more of that type of creative problem solving after attending new training that started Thursday at Rotary Gardens, Chief Dave Moore said.

Michael Scott, director of the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing, spoke to about 75 law enforcement and city officials Thursday about his program, "Best Practices in Community Policing."

Janesville police invited Scott to come to Janesville and teach four daylong sessions at Rotary Gardens. Scott, also a UW-Madison law professor, is offering replica hublot watches the class for free.

Police will always respond to crimes and make arrests, but they also should analyze larger problems and find creative ways to solve them, Scott said.

"The heart of it is really trying to make the police more effective in addressing chronic public safety problems," he said. "What we're trying to do is develop police agencies that constantly want to improve."

For example, a bar might have problems with fights. Police are expected to respond and arrest perpetrators, but they could do more, Scott said.

Police could talk to the bar owner replica tag heruer watches about reducing crowds, serving less alcohol or adding security, he said.

"All those kinds of conditions and others will influence the amount of violence at a bar more than the police do," Scott said.

If a bank is robbed often, police could analyze the design of the bank's lobby and security cameras, he said. They also could ask the bank to have a no hats or sunglasses policy or ask the city to pass a robbery-prevention ordinance.

"They're fairly simple ideas," Scott said.

Janesville police are good at catching bad guys, but everyone could approach crime with the problem-solving method, Moore said.

"I know this will be a better style of policing," he said. "This policing perspective will have a positive influence in our community."

A recently hired crime analyst can use data and mapping technology to identify problems in the city, Moore said. Janesville officers will have opportunities to find solutions.

"They're committed and talented folks," he said.

The hope is to reduce the number of victims and calls for service to make the city safer, Moore said. Addressing victims and the environment will help.

The idea isn't new to Janesville police. The department has worked with community leaders to reduce crime and clean up neighborhoods. It also has worked with landlords and homeowners to stop nuisance problems.

Police also have started making follow-up visits to victims of domestic violence to protect victims, red

New rules just fine - Cooper

HURRICANES coach Colin Cooper is shaking off concerns the Super 14 is descending into touch rugby after an extraordinary weekend of results.

The Chiefs' 72-65 shootout against the Lions stood out but the Bulls-Brumbies (50-32), Hurricanes-Force (47-22) and Reds-Crusaders (41-20) matches were also try-fests as teams adjusted to the new rule interpretations.

After losing to the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday night, Force coach John Mitchell expressed concern the competition was in danger of losing substance in favour of style.

But Cooper, whose men ran in seven wonderful tries and now sit second after two rounds, begged to differ.

"It went too defensive and I think we've got it about right," Cooper said of the rule tweaks, which now favour the attacking team at the breakdown.

"I just think it's got to be better for the game. It's got to be better to attack than defend."

Cooper said there was still a genuine contest at the breakdown, it was just a matter of players adjusting and adapting on their feet.

"There's still an opportunity to turn ball over, as long as you stay on your feet and stay in the gate."

The Hurricanes provided excellent entertainment for a somewhat disappointing crowd of 11,479 at Westpac Stadium.

Wing Tamati Ellison was the star turn, setting up three tries, including a double to David Smith, who looked sharp after getting his chance at the expense of the injured Hosea Gear.

Overall, Cooper was satisfied, though the injury-riddled Force dominated the back end of the first half.

"We scored some great tries didn't we, and then we sort of went off the boil a little bit," he said.

"I think we're still a little bit rusty. We'd get a good flow and then we'd give the ball back to them quite easily."

Cooper said he would be demanding players kick the ball out under pressure in their own 22.

"We think we can run it from anywhere. We need to kick those balls out and start again.

"We weren't ruthless enough and when we got into their 22, you need to build.

"The 50-50 passes, we let them get the ball back, so those are things that we know we can fix up."

Cooper faces some pleasant selection headaches for Saturday's home match against the Lions.

Locks Bryn Evans and James Broadhurst form a handy pairing with the disciplined Jason Eaton cooling his heels, while Scott Waldrom, Victor Vito and Michael Paterson are a well-balanced loose-forward trio.

Rodney So'oialo got half an hour off the bench and Cooper lavished praise on the veteran No 8, who sat out the preseason and opening round in a successful bid to bulk up.

"Great to have him back isn't it," Cooper said.

Thomas sabo charms "He's looking bigger, stronger and we've been chaining him up and holding him back.

"It was good to release him. Rodney is just so aggressive and so wanting to play all the time.

"The trainer's done a marvellous job with him, he's gone from 103kg to 110kg."

Where My Loyalties Lie

By:Erin Swigart

"Someone once said that at some point everything must degenerate to work.
Entrepreneurs know this better than anyone because if there is one thing entrepreneurs do, it is work."

In The Guru Guide to Entrepreneurship Joseph and Jimmie Boyett give 5 requirements to becoming a successful entrepreneur. "Requirement # 4: Sacrifice Your Personal Life." Degenerate is an interesting, awful word to choose when describing the progression of your life. How discouraging.

I know that rigorous, time consuming work is absolutely necessary to achieve goals, especially as an entrepreneur! Oftentimes, all you have is yourself and your idea. If something is going to happen, you have to make it happen. This requires the sacrifice of pastimes, vacations, and time with the people you love. Entrepreneurship is not a 9-5 job.
However, I do not believe that I have to sacrifice everything to achieve success.

Specifically, I'm talking about my family and my religion. These are two aspects of life that oftentimes do not fit into the workday. And I am not willing to sacrifice them.
Here's the thing, I don't think the Boyetts are either. As I flipped through their book again, I found a dedication to their grandson, "the newest branch on our family tree." I have a feeling that family is a priority to them. I would even venture to guess that they spent a lot of time juggling work and family making sure the appropriate amount of attention is given to both. So what's all this talk about sacrificing everything? I'm sure there's a level of moderation there, but their book offers no guidance as to how to figure it out.

In the introduction of Bootstrap Business, Rich Christiansen describes his battle with these same feelings.

"Through the years I have consumed book after book focused on the topic of Entrepreneurship. Many of these works were well-written, satiated my appetite to some degree, and amplified the girth of my knowledge. Yet, as a general rule, most were bulging with theory or focused on high-end businesses with startup budgets over $1MM. Often they sited examples of how Warren Buffet did it, or how Sam Walton built Wal-Mart. Although interesting, for the most part I found them academic, non-practical, and often times discouraging. They portrayed how super-human individuals sacrificed families, personal relationships, and interests in achieving great fame and wealth.

I've never had an interest in achieving fame. My approach to building businesses is to do it on a shoestring budget. The wealth part interests me to some degree, but not at the expense of the true riches of life. Over the years I have learned how to navigate the demands of family, trust relationships, personal interests, and religion, and still succeed in business endeavors."

I'm looking forward to reading more of what Bootstrap Business has to say about this precarious balancing act.

Twenty-seven inmates from two subunits rioted on Oct. 4.

The disturbance began when inmates within one sub-unit refused to return to cells for a head count. They formed a line and advanced towards corrections officers. Some inmates threw furniture at jail staff.

Guards then left and secured the unit while inmates vandalized the sub-unit and knocked a hole in a cinderblock wall, allowing them to join forces with inmates held in a neighbouring sub-unit.

The riot was finally quelled by the Corrections Emergency Response Unit and members of the Brandon replica balenciaga handbags Police Service tactical unit. At one point a fire was lit, and the sub-units sustained significant damage.

Charges are still pending against at least some of the remaining inmates involved in the riot.

With Sean Malee calling the shots as playmaker, Kitimagh took the game to the men from the Kingdom from the off, and were rewarded with early points from Ronan Malee and Ciaran Charlton.
