Why chips make us feel chipper

Byline: Fiona MacRae Science Reporter

THEY may not be the best food from a nutritional point of view.

But when it comes to lifting our spirits, it seems chips are unbeatable.

They can lighten even the bleakest of moods, making us calmer and more cheerful, researchers say.

They think the effect could be down to the carbohydrates that chips contain, or because the taste and smell remind us of happy times, such as childhood holidays by the beach.

Dr Mike Green, an expert on the psychology linked to food, asked 60 men and women to watch a five-minute film which graphically depicted the devastation wrought by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

Half were then given a magazine to read to take their mind off things, while the others were told to eat a plate of chips.

All filled in mood questionnaires before and after watching the video and again after finishing their chips or reading. Dr Green, of Birmingham's Aston University, said: 'The psychological data showed that participants who were feeling down felt better after eating chips.

'In fact, calmness was restored after 20 minutes.' 'It may be down to the biological replica tag heruer watches effects of the nutritional components on brain chemistry or simple a pleasurable sensation, triggered by the way chips taste.'

Previous research has shown that carbohydrates can lift mood. This study, which perhaps unsurprisingly was commissioned by the Potato Council, used chips bought from a fish and chip shop. It is not known if oven chips have the same effect.

Why fathers spend just three m

Byline: Kay Smith

THE power struggle in modern households has never been stronger, with parents striving for the perfect work-life balance.

But academics have dealt a blow to fathers - and proved what many women secretly believe - that mothers really do know best.

A far higher proportion of women than men spend time on mentally stimulating activities, such as reading and painting, with their children, a study has found.

The research, conducted by the British Journal of Sociology, shows mothers devote nine more minutes a day to their children's education than their partners.

But the study, which focused on part-time mothers, has bad news for full-time career women. It indicates that those working full-time could only afford the same meagre amount of time as men when it comes to their sons - just three minutes a day.

The daughters of working women fared slightly better, receiving seven minutes a day of their mothers' undiluted time - but that is still five minutes less than their part-time counterparts.

Last night, the findings prompted a leading academic to warn fathers need to give more support to their partners and devote more time to their children.

Professor Iram Siraj-Blatchford, of the University of London's Institute of Education, said: 'Too much rests on the shoulder of mothers. Fathers should take more interest.' The study focused on 1,260 eight to 18-year-olds, including 156 Scottish children, and recorded their activities at ten-minute intervals.

It found children aged eight to 13 spend an average of 40 minutes a day on achievement-related activities such as homework and artistic hobbies - 12 minutes of which were alone with mothers who worked part-time. But only three minutes a day was spent on doing anything educational with their fathers.

The report shows children in the 14 to 18-year-old age group spent more time on educational activities at home. But of an average of 61 minutes, only 13 were alone with their mothers and seven minutes alone with fathers.

Fathers were more likely to spend time on leisure activities - 17 minutes with the eight to 13-year-olds and 12 minutes with the 14 to 18-year-olds.

Tom Byrne, professor of education at Strathclyde University, said the study proved the traditional role of nurturing still fell to mothers, working or not.

He added: 'If mothers are spending more time on attainment-linked activities than fathers it will be for traditional cultural reasons. It would be wonderful if in all families there were equally competent parents and child-rearing roles were shared equitably, but it is often not like that in real life.'

Why does my husband always go

Byline: by Rowan Pelling

QUESTION: My husband always falls sound asleep almost immediately after we've made love, while I sometimes want to talk or kiss, or have a bath together, or even to make love again. And there he is snoring away! I know it's sounds a trivial thing, but it leaves me feeling short-changed and unhappy. We're only in our mid-30s and haven't got kids yet, so he should have plenty of energy. Is there anything I can do about it? ANSWER: WHAT lover doesn't recognise the following scenario? Flushed from passion and eager to engage in pillow talk, a woman turns to tell her beloved how much she adores him -- and he's out for the count. It's such a common scene that two American authors, Mark Leyner and Billy Goldberg, have even written a book entitled Why do Men Fall Asleep After Sex? To many women's surprise, the answer is rarely that they're selfish swine (although you'll note the defence is being mounted by chaps). According to the biologists who've devoted considerable time and energy to the mystery of men's post-coital rollover, there are sound physiological reasons for the phenomenon.

It seems that replica hublot watches when men climax, a cocktail of drugs is released in the brain, including oxytocin, which is linked to a pleasurable sense of relaxation, and prolactin, which is linked to sleep. In tests, animals injected with prolactin became drowsy immediately.

And it's not just the chemicals in the brain that cosh your resident Romeo. The blood-rush after climax depletes the muscles of energy-producing glycogen, and because men have more muscle mass than women, they feel more exhausted.

This is not to let your husband off the hook entirely. One recent study found that a woman who makes love without having an orgasm will be left feeling far more frustrated than a man who has sex without climaxing. This is because the physiological changes involved in female arousal take longer to subside than in males.

And even were that not so, it's a simple matter of courtesy within any long-term relationship that you should not make love to your other half and leave them feeling unsatisfied. Not that links of london charms everyone needs an orgasm every time they have sex. There are times for both sexes -- and women in particular -- when the journey is more important than arrival.

But a good lover is always solicitous of their beloved's pleasure, and ensures their partner takes as much from the boudoir as they do themselves. You clearly need to give your husband a few lessons in bedroom etiquette.

The fact that it's a common problem that men fall asleep after sex does not make it a trivial one. Many people can testify that it feels uniquely lonely to lie in bed beside your sleeping spouse, staring at the ceiling, when you long to kiss and canoodle and prolong the bonding experience.

But there are constructive ways you can tackle the problem. On the simplest level, you can express your distress to your husband and ask if he could try to dedicate ten minutes (don't start with anything too onerous) after making love to holding you and talking.

However, there's nothing worse than making people do things dutifully in bed and it can be more cunning to try to demonstrate how enriching postcoital quality time can be. The trick here is to engineer some amorous situations where you make love away from the bedroom, and earlier in the day. This should prove easier for you than most, as you don't have children, allowing you the free run of the house.

Try making love downstairs, or in the bathroom with a full bat

Yellows slip back into bad hab

TIVERTON Town's recent encouraging run of form came to an end in emphatic fashion at Ladysmead on Saturday.

In recent weeks the Yellows have shown signs that they are a better team than their league placing would suggest, and following consecutive impressive performances against promotion challengers Farnborough and Brackley Town, it seemed the only way was up for Martyn Rogers' men.

But many more performances like the one they produced during the 2-0 defeat to mid-table Hednesford at the weekend will see Tivvy right back in the relegation mire again.

From the first whistle the hosts looked under par and second best, unable to match the power of their opponents.

Suspended skipper Nathan Rudge and midfielder Jamie Hatch looked on from the stands, visibly growing more and more frustrated as the game wore on -- how Rogers' men could have used both on the pitch.

Without Rudge, the Pitmen's assortment of six footers were able to dominate the aerial challenges in both boxes with ease, while the absence of Hatch's energy and creativity in midfield meant the Yellows were woefully lacking any dynamism going forward.

Sam Malsom looked dangerous with the ball at his feet on the rare occasions Tivvy ventured forward, but in the main he and top scorer Joe Bushin were starved of service all afternoon.

A difficult pitch meant Elliott Frear was unable to weave his usual magic, Lee Collier and Alex Faux spent most of their time chasing shadows in midfield while captain for the day Colin Marshall looked threatening when dribbling with the ball, but his passing was simply dreadful.

Such elements paved the way for a relatively simple victory for the Pitmen, although that did not stop the referee from trying to grease their passage to three points even further when he awarded a dubious penalty on 23 replica hublot watches minutes.

The talking point came when the impressive Elliott Durrell -- not for the final time on Saturday -- burst into the box from midfield having robbed Mike Booth of possession.

Durrell was denied by a fantastic Tom Gardner tackle which appeared to poke the ball from under Hednesford's No. 7, but the referee missed the Tivvy defender's touch and pointed to the spot.

Justice was done when Steve Book saved Sean Platt's resulting spot-kick with his feet. But the visitors got the goal they deserved eight minutes before half-time when the unmarked Durrell's calmly slotted home past Book, after running on to Tyrone Barnett's flick.

After the break Rogers threw on Mark Saunders, Adam Mortimer and the returning Richard Pears in a bid to bring his team to life.

Yet the tide could not be turned and Tivvy's fate was sealed with 10 minutes left when Hednesford hit the hosts on the break and Durrell evaded a weak tackle from Alex Faux in order to set up Ross Dyer for the killer second goal.

Book twice denied Barnett in replica tag heruer watches the dying minutes with a terrific double stop, but few would have argued if Hednesford had ran out winners by a more comfortable margin on a day the Yellows were soundly beaten.

Yes Men fight big biz one hoax

PABLO Picasso defined art as "the lie that tells the truth."

That paradox is the core principle of pranksters Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno -- a.k.a. The Yes Men -- two guys who have turned the hoax into sublime performance art.

Bichlbaum and Bonanno -- probably not their real names -- tell absolute whoppers in the service of uncovering hidden truths, in a subversive modus operandi not unlike Sacha Baron Cohen's alter-egos Borat and Bruno, with the crucial difference that the Yes Men would rather target specific wrongdoing corporations, as opposed to the everyday dunderhead on the street.

Setting up bogus corporate websites, the two admit they "pass ourselves off as representatives of big corporations we don't like."

This pranksterism hit a new high (or low, depending on your stock portfolio) in 2004 when Bichlbaum, misrepresenting himself as Dow Chemical spokesman "Jude Finisterra", went on the BBC -- replica breitling watches in front of a potential audience of 300 million -- on the 20th anniversary of the Union Carbide industrial disaster in Bhopal, India. "Jude" announced Dow would be spending $12 billion to do the right thing and clean up residual toxic residue in the area while properly compensating Bhopal's still suffering victims.

Only a couple of hours went by before the interview was exposed as a "cruel" hoax.

Clip on charms

But in that time, Dow's stock value dropped by $2 billion, a potent demonstration that, if the corporation had actually tried to do right by the people of Bhopal, it would have been punished in the marketplace.

Hence, the duo resolves to target the larger target of free-market capitalism as espoused by the late economist Milton Friedman. That, of course, is precisely what Michael Moore tried to do with his film Capitalism: A Love Story, except the Yes Men go about it differently.

Specifically, they dupe those businessmen/government functionaries, with varying degrees of success, via Thomas sabo charms outrageous stunts, including crashing a risk assessment conference with a golden skeleton visual aid (named Gilda) to suggest that if you're going to have skeletons in your corporate closet (a la Bhopal), they should at least pay dividends. (You'll squirm when one attendee tells them their candor is "refreshing.")

A series of interviews with right-wing think-tank types features one of the funniest blue screen gags ever.

The humour helps the strong medicine go down well. Where the tone of Moore's film was overbearing and pedantic, this particular attack on capitalism is caustically funny -- an exercise in giving the free market advocates just enough rope to hang themselves, rhetorically speaking.

10 Step by Step Business Startup Guide Step 7

By:Dave J

STEP 7: Support Team

I found out that many businesses went bust before they even went fully operational because they did not start right Starting right can mean the difference between success and failure It simply means I should have all the tools, information, facilities, contacts, money management and government compliances all fully prepared and organized The four key professionals who could help me in getting all these logistics organized and put my organization on a path to starting up smartly and cost effectively, are listed below They will also be instrumental as my business grows

1 Accountant/Financial Planner - I need a qualified accountant's expertise to ensure that my cash flow is in good order, expenses are well managed, tax liability is minimized and book-keeping is well organized In some cases, a financial planner could cover a wider scope than an accountant

2 Lawyer - An experienced lawyer will ensure that all agreements with my associates, staffs, and third parties are placed under well drafted contracts to protect my personal and business interests

3 Banker - A banker can be helpful as the business gets running because I may need some financial facilities (ie short term loan, credit facility, checking account, treasury management) that can be useful from time to time

4 Yves Saint Laurent Shoes. Insurance Professional - I need an experienced insurance professional to identify all possible risks that I may encounter and insure all those risks cost effectively I won't attempt to cut corners in this segment and land myself into any possible financial liability

In addition, there are other supports that may be vital to certain types of business Of course there is a long list of people who can help an entrepreneur along the way depending on the nature of the business cl boots. However, I manage to sum up four important supports that all business entrepreneurs should not miss out The four are listed below:

1 Website Designer or Programmer - These folks could help me build my multi-functional Website that would be the backbone of my entire business if my business depends heavily on online transaction A web presence is also essential for my company's brand positioning and customer after sales service

2 IT Specialist - This kind of consultant could assist me to set up a paperless office system and an effective computer system to minimize office operational expenses Besides, an IT Specialist could also ensure all business data and client database are well managed, hassle free and accessible

3 Real estate agent - When owners are venturing into a brick and mortar business model, they definitely need an experienced real estate agent to advise them on the overall cost of leasing or purchasing, location suitability for their particular business, amenities and parking facilities, monthly maintenance and whatever hidden costs

4 Local business council/association - I would definitely join a local business council or association (usually there is a small joining fee) and find out what kind of support or advisory they could provide Normally the group members conduct a regular forum or meeting, where members could seek out solutions to many of the existing problems and foreseeable roadblocks Many of them would have walked through the problems and could share with me some valuable insights

Before I start my search for any form of assistance and support, it's crucial to know what I want to accomplish with each of them and prepare a well-defined budget to meet my goals However, I would be cautious as certain supports may be expensive! Once I hired them, I would work closely with them to attain my business goals in a strict timeline

Regardless of who I retain, they should be well versed and experienced in the field of business I am involved in Most importantly, I must be able to trust them, therefore I usually select my service providers through referrals, their years of experience (which is a key factor) and I must be comfortable dealing with them
