At halftime of Saturday's Old Dominion-Virginia Commonwealth men's basketball game, Wendy Larry's image loomed over the crowd, a friendly face making an earnest request.
From the video screen at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, she invited one and all to attend the first- and second-round games of the NCAA women's tournament coming to ODU on March 21 and 23.
Get your tickets, please. That was the gist of her pitch. Support women's basketball. Make the event a success.
Also, in so many words, don't allow the women's tournament to be disrespected. Help turn it into a special occasion, whether or not ODU is playing at home.
It's too early to guess about the Lady Monarchs' participation in the four-team sub-regional.
"The fear of not knowing if your own team is going to be in it," senior associate athletics director Debbie White said, is what helps keep the promotional juices flowing.
postcard printing There's nothing wrong with a little salesmanship; Lord knows the women's game could use it. But if there's concern the NCAA tournament - the jewel in the crown - can't attract decent-sized crowds just by throwing open the doors, what's that say about the sport's position in an ever more-crowded marketplace?
"Not living and dying with who is being assigned," said White, would be the healthiest approach, but it's hard for ODU officials not to worry.
"We'd like to come close to filling it up," she said, noting that in five previous NCAA tournaments at the Constant Center, they'd done just that - come close.
In four of those , ODU was part of the field.
Because it's women's basketball, ticket pricing is market sensitive. A three-game package goes for a relatively modest $25.
Imagine what that ticket would be worth if UConn came to town.
Can't happen? Maybe not. Then again, the closest NCAA venues to Storrs, Conn., are Pittsburgh and Norfolk.
Wherever it plays, this is UConn's tournament. It's being called the UConn Invitational, and in case you're wondering, that's not meant as a compliment to women's basketball.
By steamrolling even the best of the rest by double digits - by closing in on the program's own record of 70 consecutive victories, the longest winning streak in women's Division I basketball - Geno Auriemma's top-ranked juggernaut is making a mockery of the alleged depth of women's hoops.
The stronger UConn is, the weaker everybody else looks. That's bad for a game that still struggles to gain acceptance.
Even as UConn stalks history, the national media can hardly be bothered to notice. Ho-hum, the Huskies win again. UConn is the biggest brand and presumably will attract some of the largest crowds in March, but Geno's team has taken a lot of the fun out the season.
There's something Breitling Replica Watches else at work here, too, when you're discussing the difficulty of sustaining interest in women's basketball.
Girls and young women play sports as never before, but they don't grow up to be fans. Along with men, women are reluctant to watch women's teams.
If women rooted for women's teams with a fraction of the passion that men display for men's sports, women's basketball would be an easier sell. The 8,400-seat Constant Center is far too
