Walk to school Is 1.8 miles to

ANYA LITVAK

Jenna Geiter is a sweet and polite 14-year-old girl, with purple toe-nail polish and neat braids freshly woven for her first day of high school.

In her raspy voice, Jenna says things like "okey dokey artichokey," and talks about her new sneakers, a pair of Champs, for her first day of high school.

Meanwhile, her great grandmother Pearl Ransbottom lists all the things that could go wrong before Jenna's new shoes squeak across the lobby linoleum.

Two weeks ago, Ransbottom, who has raised Jenna from an early age, learned that her great-granddaughter is not eligible for school transportation to McCaskey High School.

According to the district's transportation office, Ransbottom's house at 742 Marietta Ave. is 1.8 miles from the school.

School district policy, as set by cheap_Hermes Birkin Handbags_shop_usa_uk_62 the school board, dictates that elementary students who live within 1.5 miles of their school and high schoolers who have a 2-mile commute do not get bussed because these are walkable distances.

The boundaries are set according to what the state will reimburse in transportation expenses.

For Jenna, that means a 40-minute walk to school beginning at 6:45 a.m. or taking the Red Rose Transit bus for $30 a month.

"I'm not letting her walk," Ransbottom declared, and turned her anxiety turned to the public bus system.

"I'm having a hissy cause I'm scared to death that she's gonna get on the wrong bus," the great-grandmother fussed.

The $30 a month isn't sitting well either.

Ransbottom, a retiree, gets $1,500 each month in pension and Social Security payments. After mortgage bills, utilities, groceries and her dreaded 1991 Oldsmobile ("I hate driving," she says, "when that thing dies, I'm completely done"), she has less than $300 left each month.

"Why should I pay for (the bus) if I pay taxes," she said, recalling a $2,300 school district tax bill last year.

Ransbottom said she'd like to see the school board members and their children walk 1.8 miles each day.

Vince Doria, of 761 Marietta Ave., agreed. A single father of three, Doria is out the door for work by 6:30 each morning and can't drive his son, Aaron, to school.

"It just seems in today's day and age, like, somebody forgot something," Doria said. The forgotten, he explained, are the single working parents whose children deserve the same safety on their way to school as those aboard a yellow school bus.

Gene Miller, transportation coordinator at the School District of Lancaster, has been swamped with bus queries - about 50, he estimated - since school opened on Thursday.

The school district transports about 3,000 students each day, Miller explained, with more than 50 routes at a rate of approximately $170 per bus.

Lancaster, which has one of the highest tax rates of any school district in the county, is projecting $1.75 million in transportation expenses this year.

WALK TO RAISE MONEY FOR ALZHEI

Palm Beach Memory Walk '08 is expected to draw hundreds of rubber- soled participants to West Palm Beach's Meyer Amphitheatre next month.

The March 8 cheap_Gucci Peggy_shop_usa_uk_71 event, which is sponsored by the Southeast Florida chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, helps raise money for research into Alzheimer's and to provide support for those with the disease.

"Everybody knows somebody that has had Alzheimer's," said Liza Thomas, an account manager for health care company Healthways. "I think it's a good cause."

So does Humana.

The national health care provider, which teams with Healthways to sponsor the SilverSneakers Fitness Program for its Medicare- eligible subscribers, is a big supporter of the Memory Walk.

Like Healthways, which will make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association in the name of each SilverSneakers participant who works out at least eight times throughout February at an affiliated gym - there are 19 in Palm Beach County, from Jupiter to Boca Raton - Humana also will donate to the association in the name of the first 100 members who complete the walk.

"Humana really supports it," Thomas said of the Memory Walk, which has raised more than $225 million for Alzheimer's research since 1989 (the event is in its 18th year in Palm Beach County). "We want our members out there to really get involved."

By March 8, Thomas, a Stuart resident who works with 11 fitness centers in Palm Beach County, hopes more than 100 SilverSneakers participants will do so.

Traditionally, the Memory Walk is a 5K event. But for SilverSneakers members - there are more than 46,000 who take part in the national exercise program on any given day - a special 1-mile walk has been added.

Registration is free, though members are encouraged to raise money on their own to support the Alzheimer's Association.

Participants in the walk will receive a duffel bag and T-shirt upon completion of the event. The three Palm Beach County fitness centers with the most Healthways SilverSneakers participants will be invited to a luncheon.

Thomas, who has been working for more than two months to publicize the Memory Walk to SilverSneakers members, hopes for a big turnout at the event.

"There are 19 fitness centers in Palm Beach County from Boca to Jupiter," she said. "We're hoping to get at least five or 10 people from each fitness center, because we want to get 100. Two hundred would be awesome."

With a month remaining before the race, she's confident of achieving that goal.

"They are excited," she said of SilverSneakers members. "They want to support the cause. They want to get out there and walk, and they're getting a lot of good prizes. It gets them even more excited. We're hoping that they'll participate.

"Everyone knows somebody who's had Alzheimer's. Some of them, it's been their spouses, so it's a really important cause for most people."

The Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program is a national exercise program designed exclusively for older adults. Eligible members receive free membership at participating fitness centers, where they have access to specialized SilverSneakers classes taught by certified instructors that focus on improving strength, flexibility, balance and coordin

Western wear, Western flair Ho

In a flouncy, beach-worthy straw cowboy hat and a black shirt dress cinched with a thick brown belt, Lindsey Hincks didn't need a wagon wheel to prove Western wear is ingrained in contemporary fashion.

The ankle cowboy boots the Dayton-based American Cancer Society staffer bought on a recent trip to France was evidence enough.

"It's kind of in style," she said of the boots. "You can wear it with a sundress and look cute."

"It's America," she said. "It's wild and it's fun and truly American."

Professional horse and charity auctioneer Doug Sorrell, a cancer survivor, knows a good bit about the style.

He was charged with buying Western wear for his family's former Western store in Miamisburg.

Sorrell said his boots, jeans, and the custom-made belt bearing his name on the buckle are not preserved for special occasions like a western-themed ball.

He often wears his exotic boots while riding his horse.

"I try not to end up under the horse or in the river," he said, noting that he wears Nike shoes and baseball caps for most other things on the farm.

Here are some tips from Sorrell for buying authentic Western boots and hats:

Shoes

Expect to pay $400 to $500 for an exotic pair of boots made of snake, alligator or lizard skin. You can find a good pair of leather boots for $150 to $175, Sorrell cheap Jimmy Choo Shoes said, noting that boots with leather insoles are preferable.

If the boots are a tad too small, put them in a bucket of water to stretch them out.

"Wear them wet and walk them dry," he said.

Hats

A fur felt hat will last longer than one made of wool, he said, noting that fur felt is a better quality.

Like white shoes, straw hats have their time and place.

"(Wear them) between Memorial Day and Labor Day," he said. "Otherwise you are suppose to wear felt."

Westman ice maker working worl

Doug Wright is in his happy place when he's alone, flooding a curling rink while wearing his ripped, decade-old Adidas sneakers with a radio pounding out his favourite tunes.

cheap_Coach Wallet_shop_usa_uk_27

As he has for the past couple of seasons, the 47-year-old ice maker from Waskada will flood the floor at five major international events throughout Asia and New Zealand this season, including the Women's World Curling Championship in Gangneung, South Korea. But unlike his more famous ice-making colleagues, such as Gimli's Hans Wuthrich and Dave Merklinger of New Westminster, B.C., Wright works in virtual anonymity. That's just how he likes it.

"I'm just kind of in under the radar where nobody's heard about me and I can come and go," Wright said. "But they are going to eventually."

That's because Wright has put in ice for international events in Asia, Australia and New Zealand since 1993. Over the years, he's added to his international portfolio of work to include working with the Chinese, Japanese and Korean curling federations to put in ice at their national training centres.

"I remember thinking back in 1995 that when they decided to add curling to the Olympics, they'd need coaches and facilities and ice makers," Wright said. "Any country that wants a gold medal will put money into it and I'd like a piece of it. I've traveled over there before and now it's snowballed to what I do now."

Wright has replica Cartier Watches already left Canada to start his 2008-09 schedule in Naseby, New Zealand, the heart of the country's curling community, where he'll make ice for the Pacific Curling Championship, Nov. 1-9. He will then put in the ice for the Junior Pacific Championships in Harbin, China, Jan. 8-14, followed by the World University Games, also in Harbin, from Feb. 18-28. After the Women's Worlds (March 21-28), he will return to New Zealand for the World Senior Curling Championships (April 24 to May 2).

Wright's ice-making experience includes the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, as well as the 1992 and 1993 Briers and the 1993 Scott Tournament of Hearts in Brandon, but everyone on those ice crews spoke the same language. The different cultures and language barriers that can sometimes result can create complicated working environments, Wright said.

"You have to hope the arena engineers and managers give you the air temperatures you ask for and don't muck around with the compressors too much or open windows they shouldn't," Wright said. "I adapt by smoking a lot and learning a lot of patience. I've had some ask how I find the patience and I just say I can't waste my energy getting mad. We've all made mistakes and I've made many I've learned from. Maybe they are putting their best efforts in. Diplomacy and getting along are important things on this job."

Wright doesn't know where his ice making duties will take him, but he knows even as he enjoys doing the job, he doesn't want to be doing it for the rest of his life."I've achieved enough now that I'm comfortable and if it were to all go away tomorrow, I'd be disappointed but I could live with myself," Wright said.

Byline: Tina Junday

MORE than 5,000 people are expected to turn out for one of Warwickshire's most popular annual events next weekend.

The Leamington tiffany heart tag bracelet Peace Festival takes place at the Pump Room Gardens, The Parade, on Saturday June 19 and Sunday June 20 to enjoy a variety of music - from Indian melodies to jazz and reggae.

The two-day event was first organised more than three decades ago to bring people together with a common aim.

There will be a variety of homegrown talent including local band, The Happy Club, who will kick start the festival at 11am at the marquee stage.

Musician Martin Corbett, known as Dr Trippy, from Leamington, is set to entertain the crowds with his innovative fusion of dance music with Punjabi folk songs, reggae rhythm and 1960s science fiction theme tunes.

There will also be two-minute peace talks between performances including ones from the UN Association and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association.

Dave added: "It's been interesting times with the recession and election.

Children can compose their own music with the help of musicians of Munchkin Melodies, based in Warwick. They can perform stories through song, with the help of a guitarist, puppets and pom poms. Peacock hails fighting spirit

SKIPPER Lee Peacock believes that the Mariners' battling victory at Crawley shows how far the team has come since last season.

The 33-year-old striker scored Town's crucial winning goal at the Broadfield Stadium on Saturday, and assured Mariners fans that there is much more to come from Neil Woods' new-look side.

Speaking after the Blue Square Bet Premier opener, 'Peaks' said: "We've come down here and we've held our own, and I'm not sure we would have done that last season.

"We're not trying to kid ourselves that we played well, we didn't at all, we just ground it out, and if that's what it takes we'll do it.

tiffany heart link bracelet "If it takes a goal in the first minute or the 93rd and we have to hang onto that lead, that's what we'll do.

"That's the difference between this season and last season - we have that ability to hang on and battle it out.

"As a team, we know we're a lot better than that, we proved it in pre-season."

The former Sheffield Wednesday man partnered new signing Alan http://www.wubags.com/handbags-w/ Connell up front, and admitted that the Mariners weren't at their best in the attacking third, even after goalkeeper Michel Kuipers' first-half dismissal.

"It was a really good defensive performance and you can't take a great deal out of the attacking side of it because all over the pitch we weren't great in passing it.

"We defended pretty solidly but they've got some tidy players and passed it around so well with ten men.

"On the ball it was a real off day for us but I'm sure the supporters will take playing badly and winning, it is all about the result.

"You're not always going to be able to play the type of football you want to play, especially away from home at times.

"They were pretty direct but we will get our chance to play football in other games and we'll have to earn that right, and we will earn that right with the work we're putting in.

"It's always good getting on the front foot at the start of the season, especially against a team like Crawley whose intentions are pretty clear.

"They're trying to buy big players to get them into the league, and they've already got some good players."
